Refurbishment at the Centre

Kempsey Shire Council has been awarded a $250,000 grant through Create NSW’s Creative Capital Minor Works funding stream to support a refurbishment at the Slim Dusty Centre. This project aims to enhance events, arts, and cultural opportunities in the region.

The current layout of the Slim Dusty Centre is primarily focused on an open-plan public museum, with limited purpose-built event spaces to accommodate a diverse range of arts, cultural, and community activities.

This refurbishment and reconfiguration will address a recognized gap in arts and cultural infrastructure within the Kempsey Shire. By creating versatile, fit-for-purpose spaces, the project will enhance venue hire options and expand opportunities for arts, culture, and entertainment. The improvements will benefit both residents and visitors to the Kempsey Shire and the wider Mid North Coast region.

The new spaces will enable the Slim Dusty Centre to:

  • Host multiple events simultaneously, catering to various sizes and formats
  • Increase capacity for additional events
  • Support larger community gatherings
  • Maintain the Nulla Nulla Gallery’s Regional Gallery status, allowing it to showcase high-quality local, national, and international exhibitions, including touring exhibitions
  • Establish an art lab to provide free education programs, art workshops, and artist-in-residence opportunities for young and emerging artists
  • Offer local schools access to high-quality arts and cultural events that are not currently available in the area.
